Kearny Gap (Puerto Del Norte)

Conspicuous, narrow break in a four-mile long hogback ridge that extends W to E amid rolling hills and ranch land into the Gallinas River drainage S of I-25.
Gap accommodated extensive SFT traffic; extensive ruts. Place where William Becknell party met Captain Pedro Galego and the Mexican militia. William Becknell and his five-man party reached Santa Fe on November 16, 1821. Gen. Stephen W. Kearny's Army of the West also passed by here (1846).
