Located amid rolling hills of a High Plains cattle ranch, McNees has a 25' wide cutdown of the Santa Fe Trail on its 8'high W bank. Swale proceeds WSW for 250 yards. Rock shelf in Corrumpa Creek accounts for Cimarron Route crossing. Several Santa Fe Trail campsites along sandy east bank, plus two swales of the trail descending from hills farther east. There is a 4'high American Legion monument near west bank. This popular Santa Fe Trail crossing and campsite is a National Historic Landmark. Franklin, MO traders Robert McNees and Daniel Munro were killed here by Indians in 1828. First 4th of July celebration observed here by Santa Fe Trail traveler Josiah Gregg in 1831.
