A huge, sprawling 8,720' high dormant shield Volcano dominating the Raton/Clayton Volcanic Field. Visible from Raton, 35 mi. NW. Also visible to SFT travelers from both the Mountain and Cimarron Routes.

Part of the Raton/Clayton Volcanic Field (Central). Like Mt. Dora, Sierra Grande, despite its size, was a lesser landmark along this stretch of the Santa Fe Trail.
