Charette Lakes Fishing and Waterfowl Area
Mora County New Mexico
The higher elevation, 110-acre lake is for fishing (rainbow trout, yellow perch) and the lower elevation, 300-acre lake is a nesting area for Canadian geese and other waterfowl. It was purchased in 1949.
The lakes are atop 300' high Charette Mesa, which is skirted 3 mi. W by the mountain route of the Santa Fe Trail heading through adjacent Ocate Gap. The mesa is also skirted 2.5 mi. N by a faint mountain man-era pack trail to Taos. Spectacular vistas of both trails as well as of the mesas, Great Plains and Sangre de Cristo Mountains, can be seen from the edges of this mesa.
