The museum is located in the Cimarron Historic District one mile south of intersection of U.S. Highway 64 and NM 21 (via NM 21)
The four-story building is now owned by the CS Cattle Company which allows the Cimarron Historical Society to operate it as a museum. The collection includes Native American tools, weapons and pottery; Maxwell Land Grant paperwork and documents; antique surgical equipment; place settings and silver from the original St. James Hotel. The museum is open May-October, Monday-Saturday, 9AM-5PM and Sunday, 1PM-5PM. A noted SFT landmark, the stone-block Aztec Mill built in 1864 was operated as a grist mill by Lucien Maxwell until 1870. Here trail travelers bought flour for the last push to Santa Fe and Ute and Jicarilla Apaches were issued government rations.
