Hermit Peak
San Miguel County New Mexico
About halfway between Watrous and Las Vegas, Hermit Peak can be noted in the range of mountains that fill the horizon on the west. It is the tallest peak in the chain, hump-shaped with a sheer face of exposed pink granite. The color is evident only in the early morning hours (see photo) when the slanting sun hits it.
In the Mora River Valley viewshed, this 10,212' high peak was named in honor of Giovanni Maria Augustini who traveled westward to New Mexico via Santa Fe Trail caravan in 1863 and spent three years in isolation here.
