Mora River to Sapello Strike Valley Vista
Mora County New Mexico
This narrow valley of soft shale between ridges of resistant sandstone in formations called hogbacks, offers incredible periodic views of the Great Plains to the E and the 13,000' high Sangre de Cristo Mountains to the W. About 1 mi. S of Sapello, after leaving the strike valleys, are remnants of the Mora-La Cueva Wagon Road that climbs the hill on both sides of NM 518.
NM 518 S through this strike valley (a valley between two hogback ridges) follows the trail that thrived in the Santa Fe Trail days and linked the Mora-La Cueva flour mills with the city of Las Vegas.
